Rename "Scots Gaelic" to "Gàidhlig" or "Scottish Gaelic"

Asked by Alan Rae

Scots Gaelic is a popular but wrong title for the Gaelic of Scotland. The reason for this is that "Scots" is another language altogether and is a Germanic language, unlike Gàidhlig, which is a Celtic one. "Scots Gaelic" is therefore confusing. The correct terms for the two languages are "Scots" and "Scottish Gaelic" or "Gàidhlig".

I hope this can be corrected.

Thanks

Alan

This is a bug in language-selector package (https://launchpad.net/products/language-selector): if you need help filing a bug there, I can do that for you.

Rosetta correctly uses data directly from ISO-639, and you can check that yourself by looking at your language preferences (i.e. https://launchpad.net/rosetta/prefs) and searching for "Scot".

You'll see we have "Gaelic; Scottish" and "Scots" as separate entries.

Thanks Данило. Yeah, I see that it's fine in Rosetta, but not in the individual packages. I'm not entirely sure what the problem IS, so if you could help me put in a bug report, I would appreciate it. Is it just a bug in the selector program then? I also see "Scots Gaelic" written in the descriptions of the packages.

Yes, but due to another bug, Scots didn't appear until Feisty (which of course hasn't been released yet). The files are not there for Edgy and before. I think this is the reason it's not had much translation done. But you can still translate Scots at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/dapper/+lang/sco, but I see you've already started some :)

The bug that didn't allow me to see my translations stopped me from translating it, but it is available when you upgrade to Feisty (which is still very unstable). Now that it has been fixed, I plan to start again. I hope you'll join me.
