Unclear problems reported after import

Asked by Stani

I've downloaded phatch *.po translations from rosetta, imported them in the application and uploaded them again so it shows on rosetta they have been imported. Everything went ok, except two files:
http://launchpadlibrarian.net/11223448/phatch-nb.po
http://launchpadlibrarian.net/11223457/phatch-es.po

I checked with msgfmt, but saw no issues. What can be wrong?

There are more translations failing:

How can I solve this?

In the case of phatch-nb.po, there's just one complaint from msgfmt: the Last-Translator field hasn't been filled in. Otherwise I don't see the problem yet.

For the other ones, did you get emails about the failures? Did they say to check using msgfmt?

I've seen some error messages related to unescaped quotes.

The Hungarian one at least seems to have one: the translation for "Run %s as console program without a gui." If you look at it in an 80-column window, it looks like that closing quote is wrapped to the next line but there's actually a newline there.

The Spanish file seems to have a variant of that problem: the translation for "&Up\tCtrl-Up" seems to have an extra line of text in it that shouldn't be there, and that line contains a line-feed character. That line feed could be interpreted as a newline, in which case the quoting is indeed wrong.

I only got emails about translation import problems on 14/1/2008 about spanish and norwegian. In the email the launchpad team asks to check with msgfmt.

I have a major question: all translations, except dutch are downloaded from launchpad as a po file and uploaded back to mark they are imported into the project. Why would launchpad refuse its own po files?

With some files this seems to be the problem:

msgstr ""
"Copy text \t
\n"

I have no idea where this comes from, as these files are generated on rosetta by independent users. Can this be a bug in rosetta which generates this sometimes?

How come the imported translations are not marked with a green colour?

It's possible that the bad newlines and added strings came in through the web interface. I won't automatically discount a bug in Launchpad, but it seems more likely that this has something to do with mixed platforms and different handling of line feeds.

For example, if the carriage return and line feed that together make up a newline in Windows got separated somehow, e.g. during editing on a non-Windows system, some programs could try to "display" the carriage return by going back to the beginning of the line and clearing its existing text. That would hide the extra "Copy text" from a translator, without removing it from the translation.

Can you help with this problem?
