are gnome,kde duplicated?

Asked by dinar qurbanov

hello.
there are some files: gnome-desktop-2.0, gnome-menus, kdelibs, kdesktop.
can that language files translated on gnome and kde sites also, i.e. are that translations duplicated?
if yes, why should we translate here and there, i think for more compatibility with ubuntu?
and, if yes, where should i translate first- on their site or on this site?, i think on their because it can be used by many linux distributions.
but if they are duplicated it would not be hard to copy from one site to another.

Hello,

Ubuntu translations area are linked to the launchpad project. I think GNome also, it's an astonishing source of contributions, i think so.
You are just redirected to the launchpad translation teams when you ask for translation contibution.

Cheers,

They are indeed duplicated. If you are able, you should translate directly at GNOME or KDE first. However, you can also use Launchpad to translate GNOME or KDE, and then submit those translations upstream.

Reason behind duplication is that Ubuntu sometimes modifies a few things, and then translations from GNOME/KDE are not completely usable: there'll be some missing strings and similar. Another reason is that Ubuntu pushes translations to language pack updates every month, and even if GNOME does a similar thing with their regular releases ("similar" because Ubuntu provides translation updates separately, whereas GNOME does that with entire source tarballs), KDE and many other programs included in Ubuntu do not.

You are encouraged to share Ubuntu translations with upstreams such as GNOME or KDE. However, this has to happen per team, because each team has their own policy.
