Launchpad licensing

Asked by Rudolfs Erglis

I'm looking for a good and feature rich collaborative translation service.

I was looking at launchpad.net and have some questions about licensing:

Does Launchpad comercial register (https://launchpad.net/+tour/join-launchpad#commercial), and test (https://staging.launchpad.net/?) states that after uploading source code to launchpad, it automatically from that moment on, belongs to launchpad, as it is on SourceForge (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SourceForge).

Is there something specific I need to know about licensing a project in launchpad.net?

Is it possible to use only translation features of launchpad without hosting the source code to others?

English isn't my native language, so I hope that I described my questions clearly.

Thanks for help.

Hello!

Thanks for your question.

Our terms of use document [1] deals with licensing of translation. We (Canonical, the operators of the Launchpad service) do not claim ownership of translations made in Launchpad. Instead, we require that individual translation strings made in Launchpad are licensed with the BSD licence.

We do not make any ownership claims over the code uploaded to Launchpad, either.

You are welcome to use only the translation features of Launchpad or any part of Launchpad. If your project has non-open licence, you'll need to buy a subscription.

It's important to note that Launchpad does not allow for private translations. Your translations are made in public and could be shared, as suggestions, with other projects. Similarly, you'd get automatic suggestions for your translations.

Thanks,

Matthew.
