PO template in french ?

Is it possible to have my po template in french, or is english mandatory to start with ?

With gettext, templates follow the native language of the software; the
template is automatically constructed by extracting strings from the
software itself.

Software is written, generally speaking, in English. It's possible, but
less useful and quite odd, to have them in another language. The reason
I say it is less useful is because most translators will speak English
and their native language; it is less common that they will speak only
French as a second langauge.
