Need more space for PPA for Sage

Asked by Jan Groenewald

Hi

I am trying to make packages of Sage (www.sagemath.org).

The upstream tarball xz compressed is 370M.
It contains many free software components.

While there are attempts to properly debianize this,
it is a hard and long project as the compilation easily breaks
if the components' versions do not match upstream.

I want to get Sage to the users *fast*, first by making
a sage-upstream-binary package, which already needs
2G (i386 and amd64 upstream tarballs, and the source
and deb). (extra note: it unpacks to 1.6g).

Some space savings are gained on the upstream-binary
because I am copying the precise package to oneiric
and natty. I might skip lucid or will need to use gz compression
instead, which makes the upstream tarball 450M not 370M.

The sagemath-upstream-binary is a bit of a hack,
simply hammering the upstream compiled for
10.04.3 into a package for precise, oneiric, and
natty (and perhaps lucid, which it was originally
compiled for). But it will get to users fast.

Then I would still like to continue on a monolithic
(using Sage upstream versions for every component)
but from-source package in a PPA for i386 and amd64 from
precise going forward. This work is harder and will take longer,
which is why I have done the upstream-binary first.

I am currently using 1.2G of 2G, and cannot get the next
fix in. I potentially need 10 times more space to do
all of the above properly.
