trying to report a bug

Asked by Michael Harden

I recently upgraded a virtual machine to the alpha version of ubuntu 11.10. I wanted to post the bugs I encounted, but do not seem to be able to open one. If someone can post this for me, it would be helpful. First off, the gnome 3 can not run, so it goes to classic no effects, however in this mode, there is no system menu, making it impossible to access the update manager, users, or any other tools. secondly, the 2d version of unity, even tough it runs, the search does not work at all, and the switching to different desktops does not work, plus it makes looking at web pages very hard. when firefox opens, part of the left side of the page is placed under the launcher on the left, making it impossible to read that information. I am aware that these issues may be do to it being run on a virtual machine.

this is how I installed it.

I installed 11.04 using an alternate cd, the virtual machine is already running 11.04, but the system currently does not support unity, so the main system is running in clasic mode. after the installation of 11.04 in the virtual machine, updated the system, restarted, and began the upgrade. the thing I am most worried about is the missing system menu and inability to get to the update manager and any other system/preference program/tool in classic mode. the 2d mode seems to work, but the search will not work, but it does load and launch programs that it already has listed.

I plan to do another virtual machine, this time with live cd 10.10, upgrade to 11.04, then upgrade to 11.10 alpha, and see how that works.
again, I at least thought the testing, and developers needed to be made aware of these issues.

You can open update manager without menus by hitting Alt+F2 and then type update-manager. You can use the same technique to report bugs (with ubuntu-bug package-name). It's better if you report that bug so that apport will attach logs and other technical data to the bug report.

File it on Gnome, and someone can retarget if needed.

I tried but it says there is no such package as gnome, so I sent it up as a display issue.
