Please remove en_GB translation for survex/trunk

Asked by Olly Betts

The messages in survex.pot are in fact already en_GB.

(I tried to use a script to "pivot" the .pot to be based on en_US for a previous upload, but it just isn't worth the pain. Because the latest upload didn't include an en_GB.po, launchpad now thinks there are a load of untranslated messages for en_GB, so either I have to upload an identity translation for en_GB from now on, or waste the time of en_GB translators.)

en_GB translators will always see en_GB as an option to translate to if they set it as a language among their preferred languages (as I suspect they have). Thus, "removing" it will only remove it from display for those who do not have en_GB as one of the preferred languages (this is how we allow people to start a translation to a new language without overloading people with the display of all 300+ languages that LP supports).

As such, it's mostly a hindrance to remove the translation so far, but if you insist, we can arrange that. Do let me know if you still want that done.

There is no "translation so far" - the master messages are actually en_GB, so there's nothing to do there.

I realise there's nothing to stop somebody trying to translate messages into en_GB, but I think having what appears to be a partially done translation in place will make it more likely that they'll waste effort doing so. Therefore, please do remove it.

It looks like this question got forgotten somehow, months ago. I'm very sorry about that. I'm afraid removing selected translations is possible but not very easy, and as you point out, they would come back very quickly. It sounds like a pointless exercise. :(

I didn't point out that they'd come back quickly.

I pointed out that having an apparently partial translation there would make it more likely that people would waste effort.

Please remove the en_GB translation.

I cheated a bit in interpreting your words. You pointed out that there's nothing to stop somebody from trying to do more translations into en_GB. It's _our experience_ that this can happen very quickly.

Anyway, if you can give me a link to the project release series that holds this template, I'll put together an admin request to have these translations deleted. (I can probably guess where the template is, but when it comes to unusual and awkward procedures for deleting data that we don't normally delete at all, better safe than sorry!)

Ouch: I'm being stupid again. The release series is in the question's title. I'll get to work on that admin request.

(Note that it may take a while for the statistics to be updated; the progress bar for en_GB will remain green for a while.)

Can you help with this problem?
