Possible license issues of dropbox in a PPA

Asked by Niels Thykier

Hi

Debian received a bug about possible license issues in dropbox
(#610257), I have forwarded this to Launchpad as LP: #703896. Though
according to a reply to the Debian bug[1] the maintainer of dropbox have
a copy in his PPA:

"""
If YOU need it, then please send a patch. I do not care what is written
in the file "copyright".
I make a package in my PPA because debian requirements of the heap with
licenses and give many problems whis this (incidentally that's why I
went to Ubuntu).
"""

These license issues may make dropbox (or parts of it) illegal
distributable (though IANAL, so I cannot confirm it). Given the
maintainer's attitude to the bug, I had a feeling he would not respond
well to a personal prod. I have therefore /not/ contacted him in
private before sending you this.

~Niels

We have disabled this PPA and removed the package. I have emailed the owner of the PPA, using the primary email address on his account, but it is bouncing.

Thanks for letting us know.
