Bug report pages too technical

Asked by Clark Killick

Hello!

I'm stuck on a bug report page:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-disk-utility/+filebug/610dfed6-fe54-11df-a4bf-00132120529e?field.title=palimpsest%20crashed%20with%20SIGSEGV

which shows me some bug reports, and asks me if one of them describes my bug, or offers me the chance to report a new bug. I need an "I don't know!" button. Some of the bugs look similar, but it's too technical for me. I've no good way of completing the report; it might put some people off reporting bugs.

Best wishes,
Clark

Hi Clark,

I'm sorry to hear that you find the bug-filing process confusing. If you're not sure whether or not to file a new bug then my general advice is to file the bug and let the bug contacts for the project or package against which you're filing decide whether or not it's a duplicate of an existing bug (which is something that we can track in Launchpad).

Hope this helps,

Graham

Hello Graham,

OK, maybe someone should put such instructions on the page.

If a program crashes, it offers the user a chance to report the bug.
Accepting leads to the bug report page, so non-technical users are
directed to that page. I will know to open a new bug thanks to your
message, but other users will still not know how to respond. This
problem made me reluctant to click the "send" button on the bug report.
Thus, I think the bug report page should be designed for non-technical
users, too, so that users will continue submitting bug reports.

All the best,
Clark

I'm changing this to "answered" since Graham provided an answer. Thanks for your suggestions for making the bug filing experience better!
