Account inaccessible (OOPS-1742B1686)

Asked by Darwin Bautista

I tried logging into my launchpad account but I suddenly can no longer login successfully. I tried all the password combinations I usually use but all resulted in failed logins. Because of that, I reset my launchpad password. However, to my surprise, my username changed to the old one upon logging in. Worse, launchpad seems to have created a new account with my old username. I tried changing the username to the one I'm currently using but launchpad says that it's already being used by another user (which is actually just me).

When I try to visit my home page, I get the following error:
Error ID: OOPS-1742K1693

My current username is "baudm" and my old username was "djclue917".

(Notes for people working on this: The OOPS is an instance of bug 635430. wgrant reports the diagnosis is that this can happen "when a person's account's last OpenIDIdentifier is reassigned to another account, leaving them with none.")

Darwin, let me make sure I understand.

- The account you want to use but are unable to is https://launchpad.net/~baudm
- The new account that Launchpad just made for you is https://launchpad.net/~djclue917

Questions:
- You tried logging in with <email address hidden>? That's the one you tried to reset your password with? That looks to be the right email address to use for the account you want.
- You said "However, to my surprise, my username changed to the old one upon logging in." I don't understand what you mean. What old username?

Thank you, and I'm sorry you encountered this problem.

Yes. I'm trying to access https://launchpad.net/~baudm
and the new account that Launchpad made for me is https://launchpad.net/~djclue917

Note that my original username was "djclue917". Sometime in 2008 or 2009, I changed it to "baudm". I'm using the new one ever since.

Anyway, to answer your questions:
1. I tried logging in with my daruuin@ gmail account but I wasn't able to login that's why I tried using all of my other email addresses associated with my Launchpad account (baudm).
2. I tried resetting my password using my daruuin@ gmail account first but I didn't receive any emails from Launchpad. I then used my @uplug.org account and I got a response from Launchpad.
3. After resetting my password and logging in, I was logged in as "djclue917" (i.e., my old username) instead of "baudm". However, this was not my old account because all of my content were lost (PPA, etc.)

Darwin, thank you for your reply.

To resolve this, I believe we need to get you logged in to your original account, using the original (daruuin@ gmail) email.

You reported that when you asked to reset your password, you did not receive an email. This is where I think we should concentrate, because that is the mechanism that you should be able to use for this problem.

Did you double-check your spam to make sure something did not hide the email from you? Could you retry resetting your password for this email address?

When you report that you have retried resetting your password, and double-checked your spam folder(s), if there is still a problem with resetting the password I'll pass you over to the people who support Canonical single-sign-on. I am not familiar with anyone else encountering problem of this nature, but perhaps these people can help you.

Thank you,

Gary

Hi Gary, Darwin.

I updated the whiteboard with what I see from old staging information about the email addresses owned by both launchpad profiles. Someone can verify my assumptions about what went wrong from that table.

The djclue917 user does not have a preferred email address! Launchpad should *never* authenticate a user to a profile without an address we can send to (On first login, Lp should know what email address was used by the OpenID provider and set it to be preferred one).

The reason this happened is that Launchpad does *not* manage identity. Darwin, I think you have more account with https://login.ubuntu.com and it manages your name, email addresses, and passwords. I believe the email addresses to those accounts are mismatched with the email addresses registered with the baudm profile. When you login with the djclue917 email address, Launchpad either setup a new address or stole the address from the existing Lp profile. I think the former is true...I can see that djclue917 email address is the newest address. Lp set a new profile.

I think there are two ways of fixing this. The preferred way is to ask an Admin to use his god-like powers to merge~ djclue917 into ~baudm. I expect this to transfer the email address to ~baudm. Verify that Darwin can login using each email address (to ensure all authentications lead to ~baudm).

Merge does transfer OpenIdIdentifier on edge (Stuart added the fix a few weeks ago, but it is not on lpnet.)
If the OpenIdIdentifier aspect is not enough, then I think the issue needs to be explained to ISD via https://forms.canonical.com/lp-login-support/ so that they can investigate if multiple SSO accounts are involved.

Hi Gary, Darwin.

mbarnett performed the merge. I hesitate to say it was successful. I see *one* email address, not *three*. Darwin, try logging in using your daruuin address. I hope this will send you to this profile.

Darwin, notice that this question now claims to be from ~baudm. The other two address may be set to the NEW state, you will need to reconfirm them using the edit emails page to restore the to VALID. I do not know what will happen if try to login using the other two addresses.

Hi Gary, Curtis,

I can now access my ~baudm Launchpad account. Thanks a lot.

The merge was not entirely successful. There was a discrepancy between my "Launchpad Login Service" emails and my ~baudm account emails. My "Launchpad Login Service" emails listed my @uplug.org and djclue917@ gmail accounts while my ~baudm Launchpad account listed my @uplug.org and daruuin@ gmail accounts.

Anyway, I was able to login using my @uplug.org email and fix the inconsistency.

Thanks,
Darwin
