Please help launchpad community newbes

Asked by ybaruss

Hello,

I am discovering Launchpad after some kind of experience on other "development communities" and I'd like to thank all the people behind this "very good idea". Actually LaunchPad is sometime even a too smart idea that it is difficult to understand where I am and what I can do on pages. Some page have popup explanations but others not and some sub-pages seem also interesting but there are only titles (one only word that everybody should understand the same way).

Thus I just propose to add more texts that would explain more accurately the good idea onto each button, key words, chapters etc ... and also to sum-up user information in fewer pages because a lot of them are quite empty.

I love the idea but the shape should help to be easier to access in.
All the best.

Yes, we could probably do with more builtin help, and more links from the web app to https://help.launchpad.net/.

If you want to post some particular examples or even better some text to add next to them that would be great.

Hello,

Thanks for your reply. Please find hereafter some readability improvement suggestions:

> About users rights: It's a part that may be very touchy within launchpad but it would certainly help if a little button could expand possible actions according to user current rights vs project current location.
----> Particularly regarding Bug status change; because bug "travel" through bug management process can be understood differently by users: remembering community definition of status change close to the action button could be nice.
----> Particularly regarding Upstream bug notification; because Launchpad tree of some big hosted project (like ubuntu) is understood differently: proposing a view of upstream possibility and policy could be nice.
----> Actually actions of "Affects Status Importance Assigned to Milestone" menu should be more documented according to users rights.

> The difference between Users/Team/Project pages is not clear to users and to understand why some action may be available for ones and not for others.
----> Typical code package project should appear with proper looking. All categories ("Uses Launchpad for:" or "Uploaders:", "Component:" or "Architectures:") should have a help button to understand what is behind.

> About Teams and Community Life: Because a new user will first be discovering LaunchPad hosted community because of a problem he is experiencing, LaunchPad is quite THE only common entry point to its different hosted community.
----> Community Help (How we talk and share/What we do/What we produce/How we decide) should be provided to user through LaunchPad by the communities in a "standard" way.
----> All those teams seems to be hierarchical and some are only dedicated to one project ... where to find what you looking for ? A search criteria on teams could be nice.
----> I was expected (only a personal point of view) that each team would have a forum link because it is a mandatory tool for team or community life to exist. A team should share information and mailing lists are full of useless characters and IRC is hard to follow with jet lag.

> About Translation and Blueprints I am still struggling to understand what is exactly the rules and our that works. I achieved to write some translation but I am not sure to work correctly. For instance there is nothing in my Import queue and I don't know why. Also I think there is something wrong within "Translations you can help complete" display thus an explanation of how this list is being proposed to me would be nice.

Thanks for listening to my complains.
Good job anyway !
