How to change a Ubuntu userId

Asked by CornellSternbergh

Short version:

Ubuntu suggests the importance of using camel case, suggesting FirstnameLastname.
Attempted to create launchpad/wiki.ubuntu.com account CornellSternbergh.
Launchpad created same, but after I get into ubuntu, it's Cornellsternbergh.

I'd like to change the ubuntu name to match the launchpad name.

Longer version:

I wanted to register at wiki.ubuntu.com

I hit the create an account link, which takes me to launchpad
I create account CornellSternbergh, on launchpad
I am returned to wiki.ubuntu
I log in and observe that my account name is Cornellsternbergh

Next day, I try to go back, my password's wrong.
(Note that I save my passwords in a vault, and hence it can't be wrong, except when creating it)
Request new password... No, I have to go to launchpad
Go to launchpad, request password reset
Get email, follow link, enter password from vault, and confirm same and log in to launchpad
Note in launchpad, I can change the wiki name, I change Cornellsternbergh to CornellSternbergh
Can't get into ubuntu, password's wrong
Try changing wiki name back
Can't get into ubuntu, password's wrong

TIA
Cornell

Have you been trying to log in using your email address?

um... you mean where it says email address and password... that would be a "no" (he said sheepishly)

But in my defense, the logging on part wasn't the primary concern, I was trying to get the userid changed.

And it has changed. So, the answer to my original problem yesterday was "change it in launchpad, and wait (I don't know how long), until it shows up in ubuntu." Is that right?

But now that you have logged in, tell me -- where does your home page in the wiki point to? If I go to the Ubuntu wiki and log in (using my email address <wink>) what does it say your name is in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UserPreferences and in the top links. Because I just changed my wikiname from ChristianReis to ChristianRobottomReis here:

  https://launchpad.net/~kiko/+editwikinames

Logged out of the wiki, logged back into the wiki, and I can see my name is ChristianRobottomReis. So I can't see what's wrong on your end.

I don't know what it says my name is if you logon with your email address ;-)

But when I log on, it says CornellSternbergh, just like in the wiki name in my launchpad profile.

So, based upon your previous message... The solution is:

To change a Ubuntu userId, login to launchpad, go to edit wiki names, change the name and save. And be patient, it may take a bit to propagate over.

Thanks kiko

Here's where we disagree; I think all you need to do is log out and log
back in!

Maybe, well, probably, logout/in. But I thought I'd done that, it's been several days, and several things have interceded.

Perhaps we should say:
To change a Ubuntu userId, login to launchpad, go to edit wiki names, change the name and save. Logout, login. If it's not changed, be patient, wait a bit, and logout/login again.

But, then again, you know more about this than I, and my memory of the first day is a tad fuzzy, so we could just say:
To change a Ubuntu userId, login to launchpad, go to edit wiki names, change the name and save. Logout, login.

I'm happy either way

And to me, the important thing is that you are happy.
