Please delete languages from project: webtrees

Asked by fisharebest

My project (webtrees) has two translations with the same language code: sr

This happened because we originally uploaded sr.po and <email address hidden>. Launchpad did not recognise the @Cyrl (cyrillic text) part, and removed/ignored it.

Now, whenever I download a translation tarball, I get a .tar.gz file containing two files with identical names (webtrees-sr.mo). This causes problems when we unpack the tarball.

(FYI, both files contain the same latin texts. We copied sr to sr@Cyrl to kick-start the serbian cyrillic translation).

Can an administrator please delete one of the two files.

Similarly, we originally uploaded an en.po file (before we created en_GB, en_AU and en_US), and this also appears in the tarball. Can this also be deleted.

Thanks,

Greg

Hi,

I'm not aware of anything in Launchpad that would strip off the "@Cyrl" part from that language code. It's possible that this is a bug in recent code changes, but when I download the translations for webtrees I see a "sr" and a "sr@latin," just as I would expect. The tarballs, both MO and PO, unpack without problems on my system, and a tarball check gives no warnings or errors.

Note that sr@Cyrl is not a valid language code: the "sr" translation itself should be in Cyrillic. We're planning to open proper support for Latin Serbian shortly (as a separate language). Also, en.po and en_US.po should really not exist because Launchpad doesn't support translating to those languages.

A final point. Please, please, *please* do not copy translations from language into another! This pollutes the database not just for you but for other projects as well, as it will make suggestions from the wrong language show up for everyone else. If you want to see suggestions from Serbian for translation to another language, use the "…using Serbian as a guide" option on the translation pages.

So is this problem still here?

Jeroen

I have just downloaded a tarball, and it contains separate files for sr.mo and <email address hidden>.
I have an earlier tarball that contains two files called sr.mo.
So, this problem appears to be fixed.

I noticed another question/answer from 2 weeks ago that says that variant support has now been added. Perhaps this is a consequence of that change.

<<Note that sr@Cyrl is not a valid language>>

My typo. I meant "sr and sr@Latn", not "sr and sr@Cyrl".

<<Also, en.po and en_US.po should really not exist because Launchpad doesn't support translating to those languages.>>

I know. We maintain this offline. FYI, my project is coded in "international english" (us spelling, no idioms), and has a en_US translation, which translates things like "postal code" to "zip code".

<<*please* do not copy translations from language into another!>>

Sorry. We inherited our translations from our base project (which used a custom database instead of gettext), and we didn't discover these until afterwards.

<<So is this problem still here?>>

It is now working. Thank you for repsonding.
