What can I do to help with server load?

Asked by kendall

Hello,

I was just curious as to a few specifics regarding the build farm. I noticed that over the past few days, there seem to be far fewer active i386 builders than normal and that the building is now at a few days wait time.

Essentially I'm curious as to whether I can do anything to help with this. I have a reasonably powerful i386 capable machine that sits idle for several hours a day and if it can be used as a builder then you're more than welcome to it. Also, if there's any way to upload and publish locally built packages, I could do this to cut down on server load a little bit.

Anyway, as mentioned I just want to help with this in whatever way I can. Let me know.

Kendall

Hi

Thanks for your kind offer. We do get a few offers like this but unfortunately we're not really in a position to take you up on it yet as the build management code mostly assumes the builders are in the same data centre, which has performance and security implications.

However we are working on rectifying this! The most pressing thing is to make better use of the hardware that we do have, and we'll see a big jump in throughput soon as we've made some enhancements to the manager code.

Best regards.
