Can I create a project group for the Open Book Project?

Asked by Jeffrey Elkner

The Open Book Project (http://openbookproject.net) is a website hosted on ibiblio (http://ibiblio.org) dedicated to providing free educational materials on a variety of topics, but mostly Python programming. There are currently several projects on launchpad related to the site: https://edge.launchpad.net/thinkcspy, https://edge.launchpad.net/gasp, https://edge.launchpad.net/intro2hardware, https://edge.launchpad.net/getting-down-with. I am also about to add another.

It would facility collaboration if all of these projects could be part of a group. I just created https://edge.launchpad.net/openbookproject with the intention of doing this, but since sub-groups no longer seem to be supported, I can't figure out how to move the other projects listed above into a common project.

Lastely, I did not choose a license yet for OpenBookProject since it is really meant to be a project group, and sub projects in the group may have different licenses.

Please advise.

I do not think this is appropriate. You are not the owner of the projects. The other projects must choose to become members of the project group, and in so doing, giving you control over their planning an development.

Project groups are broken. It is not clear whether they are devices to control, or devices to show affiliation. I think Launchpad needs two separate mechanisms for this.

I can create the project group for you if you control 2 or more projects that will belong to the group.

I do, Curtis. I control: https://edge.launchpad.net/thinkcspy and
https://edge.launchpad.net/gasp (we made this maintained by the Gasp
Development Team, but that's part of the point, the Open Book Project
will be maintained by the Open Book Project Team once it exists ;-)
https://edge.launchpad.net/getting-down-with has the same situation.
I'm a high school / community college teacher who works with students
on these projects. Other interested parties often join in as well.
I'm looking for a way to make this all easier to do.

I can create the projectgroup. I assigned the question to an admin because projects cannot be converted projectgroups (they never supported sub projects). When the admin has freed the name, I can create the project group.

Thanks, Curtis! So the Open Book Project would be deleted and a new
project group with the same name created?

I created <https://launchpad.net/openbookproject>. You can add projects to this group by visiting each project and choosing the Change details link. Set "Part of" to "openbookproject"

Can you help with this problem?
