translation status does not correctly reflect synchronization

Asked by Jaap Karssenberg

I use launchpad to manage translations for the zim project. Launchpad is configured to synchronize translations from the bazaar tree. For the translation template this works correctly. However for the translations files itself it does not.

For every release I download the .po files for translations from launchpad and add them to the bazaar tree. After synchronization I expect launchpad to show synchronized translations in green "Translation unchanged since last synchronized". However they all stay purple "Newly translated in Launchpad". Apparently launchpad does not detect the .po files in the bazaar tree. This bug makes it less convenient to keep track of changes that need to be merged into the code base.

See https://translations.launchpad.net/zim/pyzim/+translations and https://code.launchpad.net/~pardus-cpan/zim/pyzim.

The branch importer finds translation files (*.po) pretty reliably. There must be something else going on. This is not a bug, though.

@Henning: uhm, I have the po files in my bazaar branch exactly how they were exported by launchpad. The translations page does not indicate that the files are synchronized on import, so either the importer doesn't find them, or the status on the page is not correct. Either way this looks like a bug to me. If you are certain it is not a bug please tell me what else to check.

The problem was that the template file had just "zim.pot" as its path, whereas the translation files are in the po/ directory (e.g. "po/nl.po"). For auto-approval they should be in the same directory, but if the template was a manual upload then your browser would not have told us about the path—only the filename. So uploading "/home/jaap/zim/trunk/po/zim.pot" would only tell Launchpad "zim.pot".

If you don't mind I'll just set the path for the template from zim.pot to po/zim.pot, and then the approver should recognize that the PO files belong with this template. Please let me know by following up here.

@jeroen: if that fixes the import of .po files that would be great.

Must say that this explanation is not something I would have guessed as a project maintainer. Maybe I haven't been looking at the right place for documentation, but haven't found any mention of the package layout needed for importing translation. Is this something that could be added?

Yup, that did fix the approvals. All those files have been imported successfully now.

To see an example of the right setup, click the "see an example directory layout" link on the page where you configure the translation imports from your branch.

Can you help with this problem?
