launchpad spoofs SMTP from header when emailing bug updates

Asked by jay armstrong

Launchpad sends out each email update as if it was sent directly *from* a user's email account to their email account. In other words, an update that I report looks like I emailed myself; an update from someone else looks like they sent me an email directly.

This is inaccurate and can be an inconvenience for building filters. In my case, I receive a lot of spam that spoofs the from field (looks as though I'm sending myself viagra & rolex ads all day) but I can't filter it out because it would also grab launchpad emails.

I imagine it would be easier for a user to build inclusive email filters based on the domain (i.e. from:<email address hidden>).

Additionally, I don't know of any reason to spoof it in the first place but I'm open to hearing some.

Thanks!

I've linked a bug describing our intent to change this behavior in the bugs app in Launchpad. Thanks for your question!
