This behaviour in Launchpad has begun to create backscatter rejections as DKIM-based spam filters at various levels are beginning to reject mails they deem to have been "forged" by LP.

Mailman has had a feature since at least the version in Xenial that munges the "From:" header, and the comment in the admin interface explains that in 2016+ this is the desired behaviour because of the DKIM/SPF problem. Quite a change from the days of SysAdmins tearing their beards out over "Reply-To:" munging, eh?

At any rate, speaking as someone who would have personally preferred to use the users' correct "From:" addresses everywhere, I have come to accept that in 2018 we should not be sending mail purporting to be from anyone else. This does not just affect malone, but may also extend out to Launchpad's use of mailman for team lists.

For reference, this came to Canonical IS's attention when a bug commenter in the community helpfully forwarded a bounce message to us to help us diagnose a possible mail problem within our systems.
