It seems like the use-case of someone using a hyphenated string "translator-credits" in some other context is exceedingly small. A more elegant solution might be to allow the person uploading the POT file to specify a string to be replaced with translator credits. The default or suggested value could be "translator-credits". This would allow alternate strings (translator_credits, etc.) and allow disabling easily.
