Kicad 5.0

Asked by Maciej

Is there a plan to release KiCad 5.0 (or a 4.x.y stable release) in the foreseeable future ? I'm asking because the amount of new features added to the nightly version places it very far away from the latest release.

The stable 4.0.7 release is in progress. The goal was to make the release announcement this weekend. This may have to be pushed back another week or two due to some issues with some of our automated package builders. This will just be a bug fix release with no new features as defined by the KiCad stable release policy[1].

The hope is to branch stable release 5 within the next month or two. Once the stable 5 branch is created, the goal is to get release candidate builds out for general testing soon there after. Once the stable 5 branch is deemed ready for release, I will tag it and make the release announcement once the packages are ready for window, osx, and linux. I would hope that this will happen before the end of the year but it all depends on the stability of the stable 5 branch and the availability of developers to fix any outstanding issues.
