Same folder for footprint and 3D file

Asked by jbdw

While officially KiCad placed all 3d model files (*.wrl and *.wings ) in folder packages3d/nnn.3dshapes, to simpilfy on file management I use one folder / same folder for *.kicad_mod and its related *.wrl. I did this to simpilfy in monitoring the related footprint files ( xxx.kicad_mod, xxx.wrl n xxx.wings ). With this way, it is easier and faster knowing which footprint has not completed with 3dmodels, or conversely which 3dmodels which has not completed with its footprint.

Forexample in my case for smd footprints, I did not place the *.wrl ( and *wings) in folder packages3d, rather I use SMDx.pretty for all smd_footprint (.kicad_mod) and smd_3dmodel (*.wrl ) as well its smd_3dmodel.wings. So far I never met any problems with such arrangement.

Question : whether this kind of file placement ( single folder for *.kicad_mod and *.wrl) will lead into non-compliance with kicad system as a whole?

thanks n rgds /jbd
