via to plane thermal relief

Asked by PaulG_PAHS

Looking for where KiCAD adds the thermal relief to vias that connect to an internal or external plane layer. I have seen some comments about creating a one-pin module and assigning it to the net and then putting it over each via or replacing each via. I'm not really sure what the solution others are using, but this should be a fundamental part of the application. Please help.

A thermal relief on vias has no sense:
Thermal reliefs are provided to facilitate soldering and unsoldering through hole components (especially for multi-layers boards).
What is the purpose of a thermal relief on vias?

Hi Jean-Pierre
Two reasons I was expecting it:
1) in other layout packages I have used in the past this was the case, so
it was an expectation and I was usure what would actually happen.
2) I read that is it hard on the drills to go through the copper cladding
on the layers, so had the expectation it would be cleared before drilling,
but thinking it through now, that one does not make sense. The have copper
at the via wall to connect to the drill would have to go through a copper
clad layer.

I completed my PCB and indeed on the vias I needed connected to a plane
they connected.

One unexpected behavior was that if I moved vias that did not connect to
the plane, that the plane did not regenerate. I had to do this to meet the
design rules and then found my planes shorted together because the plane
layers did not update. Do I need to delete and redraw the plane layers
each time I want them to update?

Thanks
PaulG
