kicad next release 2014

Asked by Gaston Schelotto

Hi All,

I only use KiCAD to make professional PCBs since 2010 and I'm very happy with my designs. It's an outstanding alternative to other EDA suites.

I see you are working hard on new features, bugs fixing and some improvements.
Is there a target date for the launch of a new version during 2014?

regards,
gaston

Hi Gaston,

It is very hard to tell a specific date. There is a lot of changes going on in KiCad development, making the testing branch rich in features, but at the same time - a bit unstable. We have a few points that we consider relevant to have in EDA application and once we add them, we will have to spend some more time on testing and debugging. We plan to reach that state by the end of the year, but it is not carved in stone. If you feel courageous, you may help us by testing and reporting bugs, it should speed up the process.

Orson, CERN

Hi everyone,
just saw a video on Youtube with the new KiCad feature and I'd like to know if there's a test release available for Windows.

Regards,
Daniele

Hi Daniele,

Please keep in mind that the new features are still experimental and considered a bit unstable. There is a topic on the KiCad users mailing list, where volunteers provide releases for WIndows, but we cannot take any responsibility for those builds:
https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/kicad-users/conversations/topics/17959
Anyway, it should be enough to get a feeling of the upcoming changes.

Hi Orson,
Thank you very much for your quick reply; I'll try right now and meanwhile I understand very well these realeases can be unstable (but this way I can try new features and even report bugs).

Regars,
Daniele

Hi Orson,

Great, I accept the challenge. Currently there's not the best time to test it but I'll run the risk. I also use the linux version so I hope give you more feedback.

gaston
