selecting particular components in pcbnew

Asked by Robert Wu

Hi All,

I'm new to KiCad and have gone thru many tutorials. I've searched for this but I was not able to find it. I am not new to PCB layout as I have used Altium extensively. One of the features I was wondering about KiCad was the ability to select particular components.

I am able to group/create a block and drag them but I'd like to move the components that are associated to a chip and drag them.

Thank you all in advance for the help!

Rob

The only thing like that in eeschema is the block drag... otherwise you
should better explain what do you mean with 'associated to a chip'

Lorenzo, Thanks for your advice, what I meant by associated to a chip is that if you have filter caps, resistors, inductors that needs to be close to the chip, I'd like to ONLY move those components. They aren't placed in a perfect rectangle or square, so I'd like to for example, in windows, to select files, you hold ctrl+whatever file you want to select; in Altium, it is the same way. Can I do that in KiCad?

I'm sorry, I should also specify that I'd like to do this in pcbnew.

Hi Robert,

Which version of KiCad do you use? We have included a new selection tool that works in the way you have described. You may first select a rectangular area and then extend the selection by holding Shift and clicking individual components. To use it, you need to have the product branch and revision >= 4863. If so, please select menu View->Switch canvas to OpenGL to activate the described mode. Also, if you decide to use even newer revision (>=4874), you will have access to new Push and Shove router (here you can see the old version in action: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zxHDAHpR5Ls).

Kind regards,
Orson, CERN
