Icons a little bit confused

Asked by Bruno A. Almeida

Am I the only one who thinks that the icons are very similar? Difficult to differenciate?

I was more comfortable with the older ones.

Thanks for sharing your insight Bruno. We are always looking for ideas and help.

You can see the discussion regarding icons on the Kicad Developers mailing list. The work started in august. If you have concepts for modifications to the new icons (actual bitmaps or svg file are the best) to make them better, your ideas will be welcome.

Alternately you can always go back to a previous version, or extract the old icons from an old version and rebuild the current version with them. The icon build system changed a bit though so there is a small amount of work to be done for this.

Or if you want to code a themeing module for kicad that allows users to select a preferred icon set I'm sure it will be well received.

If you are interested in any of the above options, let us know. For instance I can show you how to download the SVG originals of the icons so that you can tweak them with your suggestions...

Hello hauptmech,

Sorry for the delayed response, I was in a hurry.

I'm not a designer, it was just my impression about the icons, I use Kicad for a long time and I have this impression that I hadn't before, perhaps this is an exception.

Coding a module for selecting themes is a very good idea, I'll start to study for doing this in a near future, since I'm very busy at work for now.

Have a good day!

I don't know why the icons changed but I don't particularly like the new ones.

The style is strange but more importantly they are just too big, and now the toolbars can't all fit on the screen, so it's a pain to actually use the program.

I have no idea how to re-compile (properly) with the old icons so some kind of selectable theme support would be great, thus I could choose whichever icons I like with ease.

Apparently core developers all have big monitors, so we poor people with
only 1024x768 are stuck with huge icons:P With fluxbox you have to put
the window full screen (meta-space or whatever you bound it to) to see
the last icon in the vertical bars...

I don't think ATM this would be possible. *If* wx supports theming like
plain GTK should be easy to support (and I don't like the icons linked
in the executable idea, but that's not a big issue)

I have no idea what wx supports, I know pretty much nothing about the code side of things here.

But I was thinking more like an internally supported theme option built into KiCAD itself rather than a generic one based on GTK or such.

Of course, whichever way gives the option, I wouldn't care, as long as it worked!

(By the way, how do you quote other people on this thing?)
