Do you know if he's doing this on a clean system? I wonder if he could create this distribution using VirtualBox so that it's not tainted with files on a production machine.

as of 3.x JoeOS is being developed on a virtual machine (qemu). However the previous version 2.5 will be re-built in a virtual machine. However 1.5 will take longer, about a couple more weeks.
