William,

right mouse button click on the desktop.
highlight and click on Change Desktop Backgroud

on the tabs click on visual effects.

pick normal or if you have good card check extra.

You can also install Compiz for special effects...

Hi Leo, yes that helped... sorry it took so long to get back to you. Upgraded to 10.4 and have not come across this problem.
