grub rescue

Asked by Joseph T Murphy

I have two hard drives on a computer. One drive has Windows XP, the other has Ubuntu 11.04.
Usually when booting I have a choice of hard drives. Then one day upon booting I received an

error: no such device: ( followed by a string of numbers)
grub rescue>

I've tried many cures: Getting a Boot Repair Disk from XP. Information and details about solutions from Western Digital (Hard Drive is WD Caviar Blue). The WD Drive checked out as having no errors.

Then I found some info about installing Ubuntu on the same drive as Windows XP. I did and then when booting I was given a choice once again of booting Ubuntu or Windows XP. I chose Windows and before Windows booted a Blue Screen appeared and stopped the booting. So if the WD hard drive has no errors, what can be done except to format the drive and reinstall Windows XP?

When trying all of these solutions I disconnected the hard drive containing Ubuntu 11.04.

Thank you

Hello Joseph.
I am not an expert but have been an Ubuntu user for a few years and have a suggestion.
I have not upgraded to 11.04 yet I tend to stay with LTS. versions. I am aware of a few minor issues with the new version of Grub2 introduced in 11.04.and the Windows 7 boot loader. Their is documentation available
that address these issues and are not difficult to cure.
You can reinstall Grub2 from the rescue mode selected at the boot selection menu. You will require an Internet connection but here is my best recommend for you .go to this page and navigate towards the bottom an find the instructions for purge and reinstall.
You will need an internet and live cd for your version of Ubuntu. I hope this helps you or at least gets you on the right track

Dear Joe Wizz

I tried your suggestions but had no luck. Something I did after that caused a crash. I had to go to a local repair shop for the fix.

Thanks for trying to help me.
