text box not rendered

Asked by John Burkhart

I want to thank you again for this extension, I am quite sure I'll be using it extensively.

I noticed however, as I'm playing with it, that text boxes are not rendered. I would presume, this has something to do with the fact that text boxes are not in the official svg specification? Is there a work around?

Hi John,

if you refer to text that is assigned to a frame using "flow into frame" then you're right. As it is not part of the standard, the browsers can't interpret it. As you mentioned, this is not specific for JessyInk, but happens with any Inkscape SVG-image using this feature. I guess the only way to fix this problem would be for Inkscape to change the way the feature is implemented. It might be possible to have it act in the same way, but at the same time store the text without using non-standard elements.

The only workaround I have found is not to use the feature and to manually insert the line breaks.

Cheers,
Hannes

Hi

First off, I am a fan of Inkscape, and doing presentations the JI way seems to me the right way. That is why I jumped on the bandwagon immediately.

I think the issue with text should be announced quite prominently in the webpage. I took the plunge and used JI 1.5.5 for my PhD defense talk, and the problem with the flowed text was a very unwelcome surprise.

It is important to warn users. Even though I do not write much text in the slides, it is very inconvenient to do so with manual line breaking. And Inkscape is very limited when handling texts - in fact, it is the area where a traditional slide tool is missed the most (not that their text handling is great).

In passing (sorry for hijacking the thread): there are problems with masks and computation of the 'bounding box' of the slide in JI 1.5.5. It seems to be OK for 2.0.

I think this FAQ answer clarifies the issue and may be a good point to link to:

This information is also useful: http://sozi.baierouge.fr/wiki/en:tips#convert_texts_to_paths

Can you help with this problem?
