effects menu: show the status of effects

Asked by Haldor on 2010-05-10

Hello Hannes, perhaps I can suggest a minor improvement in the effects menu:
Currently, the values displayed in the effects menu reflect the last setting that was applied.
Though, it would be helpful if the displayed values would reflect the current effect settings of the (selected) object instead.

Hi Haldor,

thanks for your idea! I think it would be great to display the current settings and not the last used ones. In fact, I have been thinking about how to this for a while. The problem is that Inkscape decides which values are displayed and to my best knowledge there is no way I could change that (apart from maybe writing a patch for Inkscape to change how the extension system works). In Inkscape, displaying the last values is a good idea for most extensions. However, for JessyInk this is rather inconvenient. The first idea I had was to write the summary extension. In this way people are at least able to check which settings they used. Unfortunately, this is still very cumbersome and almost impossible to maintain. This is why I decided to move to a completely different architecture in version 2.0.

In this version there will be graphical elements that you can group with your objects to assign an effect. By changing the text of these elements, you can alter the settings. A little preview of things to come is provided by the "video"-extensions in the upcoming version 1.5. There is a short description on the google code page at http://code.google.com/p/jessyink/wiki/VideoElement and if you branch the "trunk" on this site, you can play around with it. If you get a chance to have a look at it, let me know what you think.
