text width (changing width betwen font glyphs)

Asked by HKarlo

I was wondering if it's possible to adjust the spacing between glyphs in a text object, just like you would do with spacing between lines.

T R E E
becomes
TREE
or
T R E E

(sorry for the silly example, but I don't know how to call this text property)
If it's not yet possible, maybe that's a nice feature for next release! Actually you can do that in GIMP, I was wondering if it's already possible in inkscape.

thanx

It is calling 'kerning'
you could manually adjust it: select desired letter (glyph), then press
Alt+Arrows (Left, Right, Up or Down)

cheers, Oleg

Thanx

apparently it is not working, though. I'm using Inkscape 0.47. I enter some text, I select the letters of the word I want to be more "compressed" and press alt+left/right/up/down but nothing happens. Does it work with just some fonts maybe? I know some of them are mono-spaced, others are proportionally spaced. Does this matter?

afaik that is not font dependent.
pls read through http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Text-Character.html to more info.

Ok, it works, thanx, my mistake was trying to make it work on flowed text - in fact I needed to convert the flowed text into regular text to make the kerning work.
