Hi,

1. Select your rectangle.
2. Open the Fill and Stroke dialog (Object>Fill and Stroke or Shift+Ctrl+F).
3. Select the Fill tab.
4. Click on the No paint icon (first left).

There are other ways to apply a color in Inkscape, and I suggest that you read the color attributes section in Tav's manual:

Can you help with this problem?
