exporting vectors for import to cnc milling program (Vectric Cut2

Asked by Kelly McClellan

Hello. I am a new user and also new to drawing packages in general. I am attempting to use Inkscape to draw more complicated shapes/paths than my current Cut2D CNC design/milling product will do. Cut2D allows me to import .ai, .dxf, .eps, and .pdf formats. I have tried to draw a simple polygon outline and import it as dxf, eps, and pdf. Dxf crashes my milling program. eps and .pdf both import, but with dual/parallel vector paths flanking/outlining my polygon. My milling software sees this as two vectors and attempts to create toolpaths for both. I only want to see/use a single line/vector. Any ideas how I might configure my drawings so that this is possible? Any CNC'ers out there? Thanks in advance for any ideas!

It's hard to guess what the problem might be without seeing an example of the type of file that you are trying to export. If you are drawing lines with the calligraphy tool, or are using a shape setting for the freehand or Bezier tool, then this problem is expected, because in this case the lines are not really lines, but thin solid shapes. If you use the freehand or Bezier tool with the shape set to None, then you will get real lines, which should export to single lines.

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to answer my question.  It seems I might need to add some detail.  However, the information you provided me may prove to be helpful as well.  I can tell you what I did as a test to see if I would be able to import a useable file from Inkscape.  Essentially I quickly determined how to use the polygon/star tool and created a simple 8-sided polygon.  I save the file as .eps, .pdf, and .dxf.  I was able to import both the eps and the pdf into my CNC software.  However, upon attempting to create toolpaths for the vectors, I discovered that indeed I was attempting to toolpath 2 parallel vectors.  This is how I discovered the problem.  I assumed that the dual vectors were a result of the stroke setting for the polygon which essentially "drew" two parallel vectors and then "filled" them with color to create the desired thickness stroke/line.  Assuming this I created the polygon and then changed the stroke attributes to 0
(zero) point setting and then saved the file.  I was unable to get any data when attempting to import those files.

So hopefully that describes the challenge I have better.  I may just not be able to do what I am attempting, but any help you might offer would be great!

Thanks again,
Kelly McClellan

Have you tried using a fill and no stroke? Based on what you've said so far, I think this should work.

Hi!
Theres CAM extension for Inkscape called Gcodetools.

It benefits a lot of functions for CNC Mills, Lathes, Plasma and Laser cutters.

Gcodetools generates gcode straight from Inkscape. Here's a link to Gcodetools developers site: http://cnc-club.ru/forum/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=35#p65

Can you help with this problem?
