Hi there,

there are few workarounds for doing that:

for inserting such symbols you could simply use the standard character
map (sorry I don't know which OS do you use for detailed indtructions)

if your work depends havily on math/chem symbols, you can give a try
to nice extension TexText (LATEX in Inkscape) - look here -
http://www.elisanet.fi/ptvirtan/software/textext/

now what about subscript. Inkscape atm haven't standard functions for
that. but again you are free to find solution - it can be for example
manual adjusting of size of the subscripted text. or TexText again.
also nice program for working with text is Scribus - great DTP tool.
you could save you work in SVG and paste/open it to/in Inkscape.

cheers, Oleg
