cannot change color of font

How do I change the color of the font from black to a different solid color?

well. there are few workarounds:
1. in the bottom of Inkscape window you could see the 'palette' with colors. select some text, or part of it and then click on some desired color in palette.
2. select text and press Ctrl+Shift+F (or go Object->Fill and Stroke) there you will see Fill. Solid fill hiding under rectangle after cross (Flat color). there will be many methods for color applying.
