Visio support

Asked by Paul dH

Hi there,

Really love the program, but as a frequent Visio user I really miss the Visio support in Inkscape. I've seen the roadmap and that there will be visio functionality in 0.48. Now my question, how far will the Visio support get, can I edit Visio 2003 files with shapes etc..?

I now I can create some kind of plugin or whatsoever, the only thing standing between is my lack of coding knowledge. What language does Inkscape use?

Thanks and greets,
Paul

Hi Paul,

I'm not sure the roadmap is currently up to date... but visio support would be a nice improvement indeed.

>What language does Inkscape use?
Inkscape (core) mainly uses c++, but most import/export extensions are in Python.

More details on the wiki: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/ScriptingHOWTO
I also suggest that you take a look at the existing extensions (in the Inkscape share/extensions directory).

Don't hesitate to post to the Inkscape devel list if you need some infos or suggestions (https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/inkscape-devel).

Regards.

in addition to JazzyNico post I wish to say:
afaik, Visio have few formats, some of them binary, some are
XML-based. I think the first step is the implementation of XML-based
convertor, since SVG in fact is XML-based language also.
the binary formats need much more coding skills to implement.

Cheers, Oleg

Yeah this would be so great, the crossover to linux was hard. I can't use some of my programs I am used to. But a lot of great free software have so much potential to beat the Microsoft ego. And Inkscape is definitely one of them, I already made some great graphics for school :)

I realy hope to get the hang of c++ coding, so I can help on a few projects. The only thing I can do now between school activities is testing and documenting or something.

Good idea, maybe I can help posting new ideas.

Oleg,
I had a look around on the MSDN website and this is way out of my lead, your opinion seems right as fas I read. But it seems manageable I think.

Can you help with this problem?
