problem with flourishes in .47 version

Asked by craftaddict

I started using inkscape a few days ago and am a beginner. I had seen a tutorial on making flourishes which made it look so easy to do that I thought I would have a go. I had version .46 installed on my computer so tried on that one.

I clicked on the pencil , then on create spiropath and had smoothing at 100 pct as explained in the tutorial. I made flourishes with several different settings, elipse, triangle in, triangle out and non and even played around with them by moving the nodes and rotating them. My only problem was that the program regularly crashed and shut down (and of course I was not always remembering to save as I went along

OK, I thought maybe I should install the new version .47, it might be more stable. So I installed it and when I tried to do my flourishes it wouldn't work any more............ I could only get straight lines, no more flourishes. Somone suggested I reduce the smoothing and that worked a bit better but on the previous version it worked much better, even at 100 pct.

I was so disapointed that I tried to go back to the previous day to the older version with windows xp (restore) and when I tried to run inkscape I got a runtime error. Now I deleted the program and reinstalled it (.46) and it seems ok. And I can do my flourishes again

But I would like to know why it doesn't work with the new .47 version which is supposed to be more stable ?

thanks to anyone who can help, I really look forward to learning to use inkscape with its endless possibilites. So far I have only dabbled a bit with an old program called micrografx draw and PSP.

Cheers,
Jo

Hi Jo,

I confirm that smoothing is a bit strong when on Spiro mode. I also get a straight line if I use it with small curves at 100%.
Did you try to use the Bézier curves mode instead? It seems to work well and gives nice curves even at 100%.
You can find more details on the pencil tool on Tav's manual:
http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Paths-Creating.html

Regards.

Merci Nico, I have now reverted to .46 and besides it crashing all the time seem to manage to use it pretty well. Do you know if I can install .47 on my computer and still keep .46 as well ? I know they act differently and would like to play around with the new one but have the confort of going back to the older, if unstable, version. Thanks for the link to tavmjong, lots of great info there.

Yes. Download a compressed version and unzip (and run) it where you want. The official version for win32 is available here:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/inkscape/files/inkscape/0.47/Inkscape-0.47-3-win32.7z/download

Sorry if it wasn't clear.

Just download the file from the link I gave you, and unzip it (with 7zip) in a different directory (let's say on your desktop!). Then open the unzipped folder and run inkscape.exe.
If you don't have 7zip installed, there's also a traditional zip version here (the file is bigger...):
http://sourceforge.net/projects/inkscape/files/inkscape/0.47/inkscape-0.47-3-win32.zip/download

Regards.

I can't seem to unzip it. I tried with tugzip and winrar. Tugzip created and empty folder and winrar gave this message ! D:\Programs\Inkscape New\inkscape-0.47-3-win32.zip: Unexpected end of archive

Any idea ? I don't really want to install another unzipper on my computer as I have always been able to unzip most things with these two.

Arghh! There's probably a problem with the zip archive...
I try to download it and let you know.

No, I've downloaded it and unzipped with no problem.
Maybe a problem during download... Could you try to download it again. I've sometimes had problems with sourceforge mirrors?

got it, downloaded it for a second time and it worked. Now I am going to practice what you suggested in your previous emails. Any good tutorials you could recommend for the new version ? Thanks again for all your patience with this begginer :-)

There are lots of tutorials on the Inkscape Tutorial Weblog: http://inkscapetutorials.wordpress.com/
(but nothing for 0.47 yet)

I want to say thanks for all your help and patience but I think I might give up on inkscape. I need someone sitting right next to me on this program telling me what I am doing wrong, everytime I touch one thing another goes wrong. And I can't keep asking you questions ten times a day, I am sure you have better things to do.

Inkscape is not *very* difficult to use (compared to other vector graphics tools) and it's worth the time spent to learn it. Read the manual, try to reproduce some tutorials and I'm sure your Inkscape skill will improve quickly.

And don't hesitate to ask again if you need help. I'm not alone, and if I can't give you an answer, someone else will do.

Regards.

Thanks Nico, I will persist. But you were the only one to answer so far......... :-)) and I didn't want to keep bothering you. Will start a new subject with my next question.
