how do you create these so you can use them as a desktop background

how do i create a desktop background using inkscape....i have created one on a4 size do i need to change this to desktop xxx*yyy

or is there an easier way

Hello,

You need to export your image to bitmap. File -> Export Bitmap.
There you could set appropriate resolution. Since Inkscape is vector editor you needn't worry about image quality degradation when resized. It would be nice in all resolution (almost, tiny images like icons needs some additional attention).
