not a valid XML document

Asked by fyoung68

Hi, I hope that I have come to the right place. From looking at the other posts it would seem that it is.

I have just downloaded Inkscape 0.47 the stable version by all accounts. When I open it up with the shortcut I get the following message:-The preferences file C:\Users\Fiona\AppData\Roaming\inkscape\preferences.xml is not a valid XML document.

Inkscape will run with default settings, and new settings will not be saved.

How can I solve this please?

Hi,
The easiest way to restore a correct behavior is to remove (or rename) your current preferences.xml file.
A new one will then be created with default parameters.
Did you have Inkscape 0.46 installed before installing 0.47? It could be a migration issue.

Hi JazzyNico,

Is this preferences.xml file unique to inkscape? If so how can I find and delete it or rename it. What I rename it? If it is not unique to Inkscape, would removing it or renaming it affect anything else on my laptop?

I did have Inkscape 0.46 but I deleted it a while back.

I would very much appreciate further guidance on this matter.

Thank you.

The file is located here (as written in the error message):
C:\Users\Fiona\AppData\Roaming\inkscape\preferences.xml

Renaming it only affects your Inkscape preferences, and nothing else (no problem for the other users and applications).

Deleting 0.46 didn't delete this file, and it probably has something that 0.47 doesn't understand.

Can you help with this problem?
