What's your operating system?
Did you install a packaged version or did you compile Inkscape yourself?

I'm not 100% sure, but I think Inkscape needs the aspell package in order to run the spell-checker.
Could you install it and test again?

The aspell and aspell-en packages were already installed. I did not have to
install anything.

You're right.
My SVN built version works well, but the menu entry is missing in the official 0.47pre4.

I guess this a problem with the ubuntu package only. New report opened:
Bug #486425 (Missing Spell-checker menu entry in Inkscape 0.47pre4).

Hi Dave,

This bug was fixed in the Inkscape 0.47.0-2ubuntu2 package, which will be included with Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx.

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask Dave for more information if necessary.
