newby cant find how to open dialog box!

Asked by tsmathers

newby here.
sorry if this is a completely lame question but here goes.
i am competent at most sw packages i use routinely and can usually hack my way around and find solutions as i need them.
i just downloaded Inkscape and going thru the tutorial it says to open a dialog box to perform alignment functions.
for the life of me i cannot find anywhere how to open the dialog box.
any help appreciated...
