Follow Link

I cannot find any documentation on this:
Right-clicking an object (Win Inkskape) opens "Link Properties". There we find "Href", "Target", "type" etc.
Presumably files can be linked. Which file types?
If I enter an .svg file (in same folder) to link to an object in anbother svg file (then save .svg file), using "Follow Link" does nothing.
Am I missing something?

That explains how to add a link. However, the pop-up menu offers me to follow a link, and when request that, nothing happens.
