how do I make an object spiral?

Hi,

Inkscape is a vector editor. Thus, playing with photos is not it's main strength.
If you want to distort a photo in order to have it follow a spiral path, you have two options.
1. Convert you bitmap to a vector (Path>Trace bitmap) and use Path>Path effect editor to add a Pattern along the path effect on the spiral, the pattern being the traced bitmap.
2. Use the Extensions>Raster>Swirl effect (imagemagick) directly to the bitmap.

What you're after is probably what's called the Droste effect plugin for The GIMP. Google "droste gimp" and you'll find it.

My mistake the actual plugin is called "mathmap".
