Using a graphics pad

Asked by LAM

I use a graphics pad all of the time. Having just loaded & opened inkscape I can access the menu items with the grtaphics pen but cannot open any tools such as brushes etc. I am using the pen now. Where do I find instructions on using my pen?

Do you mean a tablet?
You have to set it up in File > Input Devices.

Hi Gaz
Sorry but that did not help.
I can use the pen on the graphics tablet to open Menu items as well as some other functions but it will not open tools from the tools pallette. My mouse does and works perfectly. I can use the pen to edit this message & it behaves normally elsewhere but will not open tools & there in nothing in Input Devices that refers to that area.

Cheers LAM

Hi Koptev
I have a Waycom Intuos A5 tablet and a pen that I use for graphics & a mouse connected as well that is totally independent to the tablet.

Which OS & Inkscape version do you use?

I know, there was problem with GTK+ libraries, that leads to problem
with tablets.
Not sure, but I remember, that this problem was eliminated in recent
0.47pre builds.

http://inkscape.chrismorgan.info/win32-builds/ - the Windows ones
(grab the latest, from 2 September)

https://launchpad.net/~inkscape-nightly/+archive/ppa - Ubuntu DEB's
(even more updated)

Try to download Inkscape 0.47pre version from the link, I post above

http://inkscape.chrismorgan.info/win32-builds/Inkscape-0.47pre2-2.exe

Chris Morgan (builder) included the latest GTK libraries, that could
solve tablet issues AFAIK.

hope it will help you

Hi Koptev
I have just removed my previous copy of inkscape 0.47pre2.1 and reloaded with 0.47pre2.2
The result is just the same. I can access all the menus etc. with the graphics pen and I can even select a tool from the tool pallette but if I drag it over to the document (eg. the brush tool) nothing happens If I do the same with my mouse then I can create a brushmark. None of the tools work with the pen.
My graphics tablet is connected to the Com1 serial output and my mouse runs from the PS/2 connector. I have also tried a mouse connected to a BUS output and that works correctly.

Cheers

AFAIU this is still 'work-in-progress'. You might check the recent bug reports related to tablet issues for newer instructions or workarounds:

Launchpad Inkscape bug tracker search for tag 'tablet', sort order 'most recently changed':
<https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bugs?field.searchtext=&orderby=-date_last_updated&search=Search&assignee_option=any&field.assignee=&field.bug_reporter=&field.bug_supervisor=&field.bug_commenter=&field.subscriber=&field.omit_dupes.used=&field.omit_dupes=on&field.has_patch.used=&field.has_cve.used=&field.tag=tablet&field.tags_combinator=ANY>
