How do I retain the layer information when importing an .ai file?

Asked by Andy Presby

Apologies for what is probably a noob question but I'm bumping up against a deadliine and have exhausted my own meager intellect. I've checked the FAQ and manual and am not seeing any similar problems so I'm pretty sure there's some obvious answer that I simply haven't found.

Problem: I've got four versions of the same file passed to me by a team mate. The file has roughly ten different layers. They're saved in different ".ai" formats from CS1 - CS4. When I import them into Inkscape, there's no more layers.

How can I retain that layer information when importing?

Thanks!
Andy P.

Could this be the same issue as descibed in

Bug #249469 in Inkscape: “Open Illustrator file in Inkscape have some problem”

maybe there are more / duplicate bug reports, I didn't search in depth yet ;-)

That sounds like the same problem and I do not get layers who I open his files either. It's strange, I searched for "layers" using the forum search tool and didn't see this one.

If you don't have any follow-up questions, could you please mark your issue as solved (well, kind of…)?

OTOH feel free to add a comment to bug #249469 -> a confirmed bug report has better chances to catch the attention of a developer ;-)

Well, problem not solved..I hesitate to conclude that it's a bug. It seemed like I was just missing a basic functionality somehow...but ok. I'll comment on the other report.
