How to configure Inkscape in Ubuntu to save in .AI format?

Asked by Daniel IUHASZ

Hello,

I have tried to save in .AI format a few days ago and it worked but when I updated to .46-devel it all went wrong. Some formats from the 0.46 were ok(svg for example) but the .ai dowsn't appear anymore. I can't save them in .eps because the file is too large for stock photography vectors so I am stuck with trying to find a sollution for .ai format. I have also tried to use uniconverter but it bets stuck along the way.

I have read something about modifying the path if I get this error:

"Extension "Scatter" failed to load because a dependency was not met.

The only problem is that I could not find a step-by-step tutorial for this for Ubuntu and I am kind of stuck right now.

Thank you for your time,
Dani.

"Failed to load the requested file /media/Work/Drawings/100% HD/100% HD.ai" is the message I get in 0.46. I have downgraded to 0.46 to make it export .ai format but it still will not open them. I will let it be this way. Still one question: when will we see a complete stable 0.47 release? :) Can't wait.

Unfortunately I think you will not have native AI export in 0.47,
cause it is not really usefull, 'cause EPS is generally equall format,
and developers don't see problem with it.
I think 0.47 will arrive at September :)

Why is it not helpful? I tried to make it .eps and them re-import it in Inkscape. The general aspect is ok but I had some shapes over as to create a glance or a shine effect. These are gone now and even the text looks awful. Is it an import problem or the .eps transformation ruines the quality? I can supply you with a screenshot if needed. The problem is that I do vectors for stock and there I need .eps or .ai, in impecable shape and form so I am aiming for the minimal quality loss when saving a format.
I have read somewhere (don't remember the source) that saving in .ai preserves most of the aspect but haven't really tried this out. Don't know if it's true.

It is perfect that it will arrive in September. Looking forward for Ubuntu 9.10 and Inkscape..:D

Hi again Daniel

afaik and as far as i use the proprietary tools, I know, that they are
have deal with svg easily. could it be your solution?
i browse some pages and find, that export in ai is going through
Ghostscript (i.e. it simply goes as eps if i understand it clearly).
Inkscape hasn't native export in AI, so you need to use emergency ways
:)
