put text to path problem

Asked by joandart

ok.......have this problem more often than not. i drew path - a wave, did fonts - selected fonts and shift/select the drawn path. tried TEXT/put on path, trird PATH/object to path AND GOT NOTHING. then........i zoomed in on my drawn path and voila!!! there are holes. when i drew it, the path closed as expected. the path fades out to nothing and then continues to the next section - many places. i even tried the sculpting tool and parts of the font disappear during the process. no automatic about it........y....i've read questions on this problem. (i'm using the most recent version of inkscape on a new XP workstation puter.)
it's happened so often i think it's a bug.
i hope somebody can give me a quick fix. thanks in advance if u can.

ok........next day - puter rebooted b4 leaving. today, open email and then inkscape.......nothing else. tried to open a file and got same message as yesterday. inkscape has an internal problem is what was written. better report this as a bug.

How did you create the path (with 'holes')?
Does it work if you use the pen tool to create a path with Bezier curves (as opposed to using the calligraphic or the pencil tool)?
Or if you create an ellipse, convert it to path and then apply 'Text to Path'?

sorry bout the disjointed way i wrote this. however, inkscape makes me crazy....will be my death.
i was using the bezier tool to simulate waves. as far as i remember, i completed 1 wave, duplicated it several times & closed it. (6 days have passed & i forget some of the details.) i just tried to repeat it today and have a different outcome. (i zoomed in on it and saw no 'breaks'. i believe it's the nature of free software....it's unpredictable.)
to describe exactly what i did today, i beziead a "u", fliped it right side up, duplicated it selected 1 and then shift sel the fonts.....text/put on path, path/obj to path, stroke to path and nothing.
i reduced the fonts size and increased wave size but nothing happens. if it ever 'happens', i'll have to figger out how to 'delete' the line across the top of the waves........the original "u". (when i read ur message this AM, i tried a circle/fonts, text/put to path and it worked. and, as usual, tried it again now and it won't go. i must be stupid. i've lost count on how many hours i've spent trying to feel comfortable with inkscape.

It's hard for me to figure out what really goes wrong in your work flow ;-).
Maybe re-reading these manual pages can help?
- the chapter 'Text on a Path' in the 'Inkscape Guide' <http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Text-Path.html>
- the page 'Text and Paths' from the FLOSS manual <http://en.flossmanuals.net/Inkscape/TextAndPaths>

I don't have any specific tutorial links at hand ATM - but you could consider posting your question in the InkscapeForum <http://www.inkscapeforum.com/index.php>, chances that more advanced users read and respond are high, and the ability to upload images to illustrate problems&solutions is also helpful...

(on a side note: by 'the most recent version of inkscape' - do you mean 0.46 or a prerelease of 0.47?)

Can you help with this problem?
