How do I view visio documents with inkscape?

From a brief read around (including http://blogs.msdn.com/visio/archive/2006/07/07/657375.aspx ) it seems that if you have the latest Visio for Office 2007 then you can save as PDF. Microsoft probably mess up the PDF files but you should be able to import them into Inkscape (eg drag and drop onto a new Inkscape file).

You could try the open source alternatives like Dia, Kivio or Openoffice.org and see if they can read Visio files and spit out something useful.

Dia is available for MS Windows and IIRC can output SVG files ... I just checked, Dia will import VDX Visio files (XML based, probably the latest version) and will also Export SVG which Inkscape should open fine.

You can export Viso files as SVG, but see: http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/SVG_User_Experiences#Problems_importing_from_Visio_save

http://vdxtosvg.sourceforge.net/ is meant to convert VSX files to SVG as well

In my testing the sample files worked well with saxon-xslt conversion and with Dia, but more complex examples had errors.

vdxtosvg seems to only support XSLT 1. Even within the CVS repository there are no files newer than 2002.

You could use vsd2svg to convert your Visio VSD files into SVG: http://dia-installer.de/vsd2svg
