I need to know how to make the area around my sprites invisible, intead of having a white box/rectangle.

Asked by Shadebow

I'm trying to create game sprites which are just the images themselves without a white background. I guess you'd say I'm trying to set transparency within my images, but only for the unused pixels.

I've tried several different techniques, and so far the only thing my friends tell me is that I need to get Photoshop to achieve this. I'd really rather not have to spend that much money.

By default exporting pngs should have transparent backgrounds...
perhaps you could upload an SVG file somewhere as an example?

This image was created with inkscape - and then exported as png... the space between the border and the orange circle should be transparent. http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=f0da2ea42125b7aae7ba8e3c6e11ce20e04e75f6e8ebb871

Or have I misunderstood what you are trying to do?

You can also use GIMP.org instead of photoshop.

You're not going to believe this, but 1 1/2 hours after I posted this message I checked the forums on my default graphics program (paint.NET) and found what I needed; however, thank you for your response. I really do appreciate it!

Note that historically IE (Internet Explorer from Microsoft) has had an appalling implementation of a PNG render that failed to do the transparency correctly. IE8 should get it right (but has some issues elsewhere with PNG, http://morris-photographics.com/photoshop/articles/png-gamma.html), I know that IE7 still had some problems too.
